Most double-coated dogs need deshedding about once a week, increasing to two or three times a week during spring and fall shedding season. This is when the undercoat releases in much larger amounts.
Outside of shedding season, weekly deshedding is usually enough to keep loose undercoat from building up and matting against the skin. During the seasonal transitions, the undercoat can release continuously for several weeks. Falling behind on brushing during that window is what usually leads to matting, skin irritation, or a dog that seems to be shedding nonstop no matter how often it’s brushed.
The better guide than a fixed schedule is the coat itself. Running a hand through the undercoat and coming away with a handful of loose hair is a sign it’s time, regardless of how many days have passed since the last session. Dogs that live indoors with consistent heating and air conditioning can shed lightly year-round rather than in two distinct seasons. This means their deshedding schedule may need to stay steady.
